Making WCF load testing so simple a caveman can do it

As I mentioned in previous posts, during the development of the SO-Aware Test Workbench we literally obsessed about making performance testing as simple as it gets. One of the aspects that make performance testing so simple with the SO-Aware Test Workbench is that it leverages SO-Aware’s WCF centralized configuration capabilities.

How fast are my services? Is NetTcpBinding really that fast?

NetTcpBinding is often assumed to offer the best performance of all WCF bindings. When working on WCF implementations, I often hear from developers argue about the performance benefits that their solution gain by using nettcp endpoints but rarely see any benchmarks to confirm that assertion for their specific scenario.

How fast are my services? Comparing basicHttpBinding and ws2007HttpBinding using the SO-Aware Test Workbench

When working on real world WCF solutions, we become pretty aware of the performance implications of the binding and behavior configuration of WCF services. However, whether it’s a known fact the different binding and behavior configurations have direct reflections on the performance of WCF services, developers often struggle to figure out the real performance behavior of the services. We can attribute this to the lack of tools for correctly testing the performance characteristics of WCF services under different load profiles.

Agile SOA Governance: SO-Aware and Visual Studio Integration

One of the major limitations of traditional SOA governance platforms is the lack of integration as part of the development process. Tools like HP-Systinet or SOA Software are designed to operate by models on which the architects dictate the governance procedures and policies and the rest of the team members follow along. Consequently, those procedures are frequently rejected by developers and testers given that they can’t incorporate it as part of their daily activities.

SO-Aware Service Explorer - Configure and Export your services from VS 2010 into the repository

We have introduced a new Visual Studio tool called “Service Explorer” as part of the new SO-Aware SDK version 1.3 to help developers to configure and export any regular WCF service into the SO-Aware service repository.

This new tool is a regular Visual Studio Tool Window that can be opened from “View –> Other Windows –> Services Explorer”.

  • Using a service registry that doesn’t suck Part III: Service testing is part of SOA governance

This is the third post of this series intended to highlight some of the principles of modern SOA governance solution. You can read the first two parts here:

Using a service registry that doesn’t suck part II: Dear registry, do you have to be a message broker?

Continuing our series of posts about service registry patterns that suck, we decided to address one of the most common techniques that Service Oriented (SOA) governance tools use to enforce policies.

SO-Aware is featured in Microsoft BizTalk HotRod Magazine

SO-Aware is once again on top of the most favorites list of SOA Developer/Architects. SO-Aware is featured in this quarter's popular Microsoft BizTalk Magazine called BizTalk HotRod. We were requested to do a writeup on SO-Aware, and I must say it is a very pleasant approach to what SO-Aware is, how it works and etc. You can find the article and magazine here. or you can download it from our resources page here.

Monitoring a BizTalk WCF Receive Location with SO-Aware

As a quick start, for those that don't know, SO-Aware is a service metadata repository, very similar to UDDI, except without the complexity, all based on a REST-ful architecture. If you do know, you can skip to Monitoring a BizTalk WCF Receive Location section.

SO-Aware integration with Visual Studio 2008

I am happy to announce today the support in Visual Studio 2008 for adding new service references from the SO-Aware service repository. We have created a simple plugin that you can register in Visual Studio to support this new functionality.

The functionality provided by this plugin is equivalent to what you already have for Visual Studio 2010.

SO-Aware highlighted at the 3rd SOA Symposium

This week I had the pleasure of presenting a session about lightweight, REST-AtomPub-based, collaborative SOA Governance at the 3rd SOA Symposium in Berlin. The session was based on the principles and techniques behind our SO-Aware product and it was gratifying to see the warm reception our young product received from the attendees.
